At Konkuk University, he majored in Film and Art.
Why is Lee Min-ho famous?
Lee Min-Ho began auditioning and was cast in minor roles in a number of television dramas, including Nonstop 5 and Recipe of Love. Secret Campus, an EBS series, was his official debut role (2003).
Lee used the stage name Lee Min early in his career because his agency felt his given name was too common.
He later said that it was difficult to find himself in internet search results because his stage name was pronounced and written in the same way as the Korean word “imin,” which means “immigration.” He subsequently reverted to his former name.
Following a serious car crash in 2006, while traveling with fellow actor Jung Il-woo, his acting career was put on hold for a year.
Lee was badly hurt and had to stay in the hospital for several months. Following his recovery, Lee landed his first leading role in the high-school drama Mackerel Run in 2007, but the series was only renewed for eight episodes due to low ratings.
In 2008, he had roles in two movies, Public Enemy Returns and Our School’s E.T., as well as on television (dramas Get Up and I Am Sam).
His Breakthrough Role
In 2009, Lee made his breakthrough as Gu Jun-Pyo in KBS’ Boys Over Flowers, a Korean adaptation of the successful Shōjo manga of the same name.
The competition for the leading role was fierce, and Lee heard of his casting from the newspapers.
During its broadcast, the series drew high viewing ratings and created a lot of hype in South Korea, and Lee’s newfound fame led to several endorsement deals and a new Korean Wave across Asia, making him a Hallyu star.
Lee appeared in the romantic comedy Personal Taste in 2010, in which he played a young architect who pretends to be gay in order to be roommates with a young woman, which leads to romantic complications.
During an interview, he was asked why he chose the part, and he responded: “When I’m older, I think I’d be better at playing heavier, more established roles. Personal Taste is ideal because it is vivid and joyful while still having the ability to make you laugh and weep.”
He starred in the action drama City Hunter in 2011, which was loosely based on Tsukasa Hojo’s iconic manga.
The drama was a commercial success in Asia, helping to boost Lee’s popularity, especially in Japan, the Philippines, China, and parts of Europe.
In December 2011, he appeared on the popular Chinese variety show Happy Camp. Faith, a historical-medical drama starring Lee and Kim Hee-sun, was released in 2012.
Despite receiving a ten percent viewership rating, the drama was a commercial disappointment due to its high budget.
Lee’s wax figure was revealed at Madame Tussauds Shanghai in April 2013. In May 2013, he launched his debut album “My Everything” and embarked on a fan meeting tour across Asia.
Min-Ho appeared in the Shin Terra-directed action film Bounty Hunters in 2016. The film debuted at the top of the box office charts on its opening weekend, grossing US$31 million in China.
Later that year, Lee made his small-screen debut with actress Jun Ji-Hyun in the fantasy romance drama Legend of the Blue Sea, which was a blockbuster.
The Netflix Drama
The South Korean starred alongside Kim Go-Eun in the SBS and Netflix romantic fantasy drama The King: Eternal Ruler, which was written by Kim Eun-sook, who also wrote The Heirs.
It was hailed as one of the most awaited series in the first half of 2020, as it marked Lee’s return to television after his release from mandatory military service.
The series received mixed reviews and lower-than-expected domestic TV viewing ratings on later episodes compared to Kim Eun-previous sook’s works, setting a record for SBS’s highest 2020 Friday-Saturday drama premiere ratings and holding the No. 1 spot on the weekly Wavve drama chart for eight weeks.
Lee was cast as the main character in Apple’s series Pachinko in 2020.
