Valdez entered into Democratic nomination for Dallas County Sheriff and finished as the highest vote-getter with 13,867 votes during the primary election.
She was considered as the underdog against Republican Danny Chandler but she beat Chandler by 51.3% to 48.7%, a margin of some 18,000 votes as Lupe being a lesbian received high support from the Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund.
When Valdez swore on January 1, 2005, and took the office, she found that the department had poor morale and various allegations of corruption.
The jail had poor sanitation, many pending crimes, a failing smoke evacuation system, unacceptable medical care, and a lack of sufficient guards to meet the required guard-to-inmate ratio.
Lupe again won re-election with 388,327 votes to Lowell Cannaday’s 322,808 votes of a second term and was re-elected Sheriff of Dallas County on Nov 4, 2008.
During her tenure, the inspection of the Dallas County Jail was passed, steps were taken towards re-certification of the Dallas County jail system and a new jail facility was completed.
Valdez was appointed by President Barack Obama to a committee regarding immigration reform and was elected to the Democratic National Committee in 2010.
She also won the third term defeating Republican challenger Kirk Launius and also changed policies on holding immigrants in the Dallas County jail once the person is past his or her release date.
She again defeated Republican Kirk Launius and won a fourth term.
Lupe Valdez announced her candidacy for Governor of Texas in the 2018 gubernatorial election but she lost to Republican Governor Greg Abbott as she only received 43% of the vote.
