Maker and Smith went to a talent camp in Texas and settled in the US. Thon played for Carlisle School and averaged 22.2 points, 13.1 rebounds, 1.9 assists, 1.4 steals, and 4.5 blocks over a total of 53 games.
He earned 2013–14 Gatorade Virginia Boys Basketball Player of the Year. Then he was enrolled in Orangeville District Secondary School.
Thon scored 16 points and 9 rebounds in a 79–75 win over Trinity Christian School and scored 24 points and 11 rebounds as his team lost to Wesleyan Christian Academy.

Maker entered the NBA draft where he was a third-tallest player in 2016 and was selected with the 10th overall pick by the Milwaukee Bucks. He was the first high school player taken in the first round.
