Yeager was stationed at RAF Leiston in the United Kingdom and flew P-51 Mustangs in combat.
He was shot down in France and then escaped to Spain with the help of the Maquis and assisted the guerrillas in duties before returning to England.
Chuck demonstrated outstanding flying skills and combat leadership as he was the first pilot to make an ace in a day that is downing five enemy aircraft in a single mission.
War and World Records
Yeager finished his war will 11.5 victories. Chuck was promoted to captain after being commissioned a second lieutenant at Leiston and his 61st and final mission were on January 15, 1945.
Chuck remained in the U.S. Air Force after the war and became a test pilot at Muroc Army Air Field.
He also broke the sound barrier on October 14, 1947, with the X-1 Glamorous Glennis. Chuck had won the Mackay Trophy, Collier Trophy, and Harmon International Trophy.
